Resistance to Slavery in Puerto Rico
Resistance to slavery in Puerto Rico was coming to a boiling point. Enslaved Africans in Puerto Rico always had sight on freedom. Africans never wanted to be enslaved so they fought for their freedom, whether needing to "buy" it or fight for it. For example "The plan was to have as many enslaved Afro Puerto Ricans as possible rise up on September 29, kill their enslavers, and ‘…then go into town on the eve of the feast of St. Michael because a Revolution was being planned against the masters. The ultimate goal was to end up being the rulers of the country." This evidence shows how slaves were so determined to find their own freedom that they had planned a revolt in order to take over. The attempts didn't stop there though, there were more attempts in July 1848 by enslaved people. There were, on the other hand, enslaved people who's minds weren't filled with power, but instead revenge. For example " After 1848 there were further Afro Puerto Rican uprisings, but these later attempts were by slaves who were less concerned with taking over the island and more concerned with exacting revenge upon their enslavers." This evidence proves how not all the slaves had the same priority but still wanted their freedom. (Carrillo, markuswiener)
